When the COVID-19 crisis hit, everyone at Support Connection immediately jumped into action to make the changes needed to continue serving those who rely on us. Providing all of our services while working remotely, and switching overnight from in-person to virtual programs, has been extremely challenging.
But we are, and always will be, 100% committed to our mission of supporting those coping with breast and ovarian cancer.
That’s why we’re so proud to share with you how we’re doing, how many people we’re helping, and how grateful they are.
Here’s a look at some of the services we’ve provided in ONLY 31 days.
From 3/16, when we had to stop in-person services, through 4/24:
Individual Support
Our Peer Counselors had 306 one-on-one contacts (by phone or by email) with 128 different people coping with breast, ovarian or gynecological cancer. There is no limit on the frequency or length of these contacts, which are personal and completely individualized.
Some words of gratitude, from a longtime client and from someone who reached out for the first time:
“It’s always nice to speak to you and have the support to help me with my recovery. I’m grateful you’re available to do this.”
“I cannot begin to thank you and your organization for all that you have done for my sister. She is having a most difficult time living by herself, going through chemo, and being isolated, and you totally made the impossible happen by intervening and getting her a wig.”
Support Groups
We held 14 support group sessions by toll-free teleconference. Most of these would normally have met in person. They were attended by 22 different women, including 4 who had never participated in a group before.
From a participant in a group that normally meets in person:
“I want to thank the facilitators for last week’s telephone conference. I certainly did not expect such a personalized experience! As usual, this support group came with great information and compassion.”
Education and Wellness Programs
We created and held 2 brand new programs by toll-free teleconference: A discussion on coping with cancer and COVID-19, and a weekly meditation class. 24 different people participated in these programs, including 3 who had never connected with us before.
From a meditation participant:
“It was so nice to have that time this morning just for me! I look forward to next week and a big thank you to Alan for offering his time for us!”
We are fulfilling our mission with YOUR help.
With continued uncertainty about when current restrictions will end, we are still working hard to fill the funding gap we’ve been faced with.
To all who have already donated, thank you! We have been blessed with support from many of you, and we are SO grateful. We could not fulfill our mission without your help. You are a gift to us.
If you have not yet donated, and are in a position to do so, your contribution will be a tremendous help during this difficult time.
Every donation, no matter the amount, will go directly to help fund our free breast and ovarian cancer support services. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Or, you can send a check. Make it out to Support Connection and send to: Support Connection, Inc., 40 Triangle Center, Suite 100, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598.
Thank you for your support!
